The following article is based on an interview I had with Davin Wilfrid, Product Director at Future Insights Live and was first published on their blog.

It was only natural that the business world would gravitate toward social platforms as Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites swelled with activity. “How can we use this to get more out of our people?” the business world asked itself. “We need to put a Facebook in our email and have people tweet on their spreadsheets.” Companies sprouted up everywhere to supply social platforms to big companies to “leverage” the latest and greatest. And most of them had no idea what they were doing.

The Transformative Impact of Technologies in the Workplace

How mobile and social technologies are impacting organizations.

When I was speaking at the European Union earlier this February, I insisted on how transformative mobile and social technologies were to the way its leaders should envision work. Not communication. Not IT. But the workplace as a whole.

The employees are customers requiring the same attention than “traditional” customers. Welcome to the new B2C. A business to constituent approach —your constituents being your workforce here.

A peer to peer workplace

What do you do when you’re unable to fix that crash you had with your computer at work? You call that guy. That person you know will fix the problem.

You’ve been doing it all along. You create nodes. You talk to people, not to title holders, not to org charts.

Thriving in the Future of Work

The world is changing, and so, too, is the way we work. From how we attract and onboard new talent into our organizations, to how we view and measure individual and team performance, to ensuring ongoing engagement and inspiration for better business results. Traditional work practices and business structures are evolving at an unparalleled rate in the face of today’s dynamic business and technology climate, unconventional tactics and shifting workforce paradigms.

Monday's Musings: Beyond The Three V's of Big Data - Viscosity and Virality

Revisiting the Three V’s of Big Data

It’s time to revisit that original post from July 4th, 2011 post on the the Three V’s of big data.  Here’s the recap:

Traditionally, big data describes data that’s too large for existing systems to process.  Over the past three years, experts and gurus in the space have added additional characteristics to define big data.   As big data enters the mainstream language, it’s time to revisit the definition (see Figure 1.)

The Future of Work is Now

I've been through several "eras of change" at work. I witnessed the shift from mainframes to client server applications. I watched as email became the core communication tool for business, and saw it challenged by instant messaging, blogs, wikis and now social networks as each was heralded as "the new way to work." I've seen people change from hoarding information as power to openly sharing in order to help their colleagues. But during my two decades in technology, I've never experienced so many profound changes occurring all at the same time as what we're part of right now.

It's undeniable that work is very different today than it was just two or three years ago. We're interacting with larger audiences via social networks both inside and outside our companies. We're more open about core business processes like trying to sign a new customer, hiring and on-boarding employees and rewarding our peers. We're connected all the time via smart phone, tablets and even our cars. Work has changed.
